In Speaking in Tongues Audiobook, Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award-winning author Neil Gaiman reads a selection of his own stories and poems:
Instructions “is a poem about what to do if you find yourself in a fairy tale. It is guaranteed to work.”
The Facts in the Case of the Disappearance of Miss Finch “is a mostly true story, and it has several real people in it, although I have made no attempt to imitate either Jonathan or Jane while reading it. This is about the only time I’ve ever written a story around a painting – in this case a Frank Frazetta painting of a woman and a sabre-toothed tiger that was the cover image of the magazine in question.”
The Price “is more or less true. At least, the narrator in both of these stories is pretty much me, the house is my house, the cats my cats, and the family is my family.”
Daughter of Owls “was based on a sculpture by Lisa Snellings of a girl surrounded by owls. I knew the story immediately, but didn’t have a clue what the voice of the story was. I tried it as a poem, and it was terrible. So I wrote it in the voice of a marvelous writer, John Aubrey, and was happy.”
The Sea Change “was also inspired by a Lisa Snellings statue, this one of an undersea siren. I wrote it in a tiny mews house in Earls Court, with the beaches of my childhood in my mind, remembering the rattling noises that the sea made when it dragged down the pebbles. It was Kipling who called the sea the “old grey widowmaker”, and it’s a name I’ll not forget.”
Neil Gaiman – Speaking in Tongues Audiobook Reviews
Sometimes I wonder if fairies may want to really exist amongst us and if that were the case what sort of splendid and mysterious memories they may want to bathe us with. Well, if that was indeed the case then I’m one hundred percent Neil Gaiman is more fae than human, or perhaps just his idea is. I imply the man spins the most magical and lovely tales like Rumpelstiltskin spun gold out of straw! The Daughter of Owls mainly had my eyes widen like saucers. Yep, Neil Gaiman’s thought is a national treasure and it needs to be covered AT ALL COSTS!!!
As this is a series of brief testimonies and poems, it is particularly hard to price Speaking in Tongues Audiobook as a whole. I discovered some memories interested and entertained me more than others.
I definitely dig Gaiman’s writing. This little collection, which looks to solely exist in audio format, is a gem. Gaiman himself reads the stories and poems and interstitial song is through Adam Stemple (Jane Yolen’s son), whose work, both written and musical I have loved in the past.
The only issue that marred an otherwise ideal audio-fiction experience, is that regardless of the musical interludes (or perhaps because they weren’t limited to between the 5 portions of writing) it was slightly difficult to tell when one piece ended and one began. There was no declaiming of the title or anything like that. Just launching into the meat of it. But this was now not sufficient to dock off a star, generally due to the fact when I’m taking walks round town or putzing round the house, it takes place that I am from time to time distracted from listening in a way that would not happen when reading. It could have been me.
A series of quick testimonies study via Neil Gaiman. He is such an accurate narrator. It seems to be only on hand on audible.com.
Three of the alternatives are very short, the closing 2 are more story length, all are on the creepy side.
If you have an audible account and like anything through Neil Gaiman, you will like these too.
My only criticism is the music/sound effects. The mix is horrible, with the track *significantly* louder than the narration, and in several places (chapter #4) it is hard to hear the story due to the fact of this.
