Harry finishes another miserable summer at the Dursleys, and the Muggle News reports on Sirius Black, an escaped murderer. The wizarding world is abuzz about Sirius Black, the notorious prisoner who was held at Azkaban for serious crimes.

Harry is warned by Mr. Weasley that Sirius is after them. Dumbledore warns Harry at Hogwarts that Sirius is after him.

Hermione displays strange behavior and appears to be enrolled in every class, even those with conflicting times. Harry, Hermione, and Ron are enrolled in Professor Trelawny’s Divination class as well as Hagrid’s Care of Magical Creatures classes. Harry loses the first Quidditch match of the season, as the Dementors invade the field to search for Sirius.

Harry vows to kill Sirius after he discovers that his parents betrayed him and that they are to blame. Harry quickly discovers that Peter Peter Pettigrew, once a close friend of Harry’s parents, was actually responsible for the Potters’ betrayal of Voldemort. It turns out that Sirius is Harry’s godfather.

When Hermione turns back the clock, the Dementors discover Sirius and plan to seize his soul. Harry conjures up a powerful Patronus charm in order to save Sirius. Sirius, still a wanted wizard goes into hiding and Harry regretfully returns to the Dursleys.
