There’s something uniquely haunting about listening to a post-apocalyptic story as the sun sets, casting long shadows across my living room. That’s exactly how I experienced “Well Fed Audiobook” by Keith C. Blackmore, narrated by the incredible R.C. Bray. As the fourth installment in the Mountain Man series, this audiobook plunges you back into Gus Berry’s world – a world where zombies are no longer the only threat. The atmosphere was so palpable that I found myself glancing out the window more than once, half-expecting to see a stray undead shambling past.
The story picks up with Gus trying to rebuild his life on a communal farm after years of surviving alone in a zombie-infested wasteland. But just when he thinks he can finally breathe easy, a new danger emerges – one far more sinister and organized than mindless walkers. Blackmore masterfully builds tension throughout the narrative, blending moments of quiet reflection with heart-pounding action sequences. What struck me most was how human Gus feels – flawed, relatable, and utterly compelling. His struggles with alcoholism and PTSD add layers of depth to his character that make you root for him even when he makes questionable decisions.
R.C. Bray’s narration is nothing short of phenomenal. His gravelly voice perfectly captures Gus’s gruff exterior and inner vulnerability, while his ability to differentiate between characters keeps you fully immersed in the story. The pacing is spot-on, and Bray’s delivery during intense scenes had me holding my breath more than once.
One thing I particularly appreciated about “Well Fed” is how it explores themes of community and survival without losing its gritty edge. It made me think about what it truly means to rebuild after catastrophe – both physically and emotionally. By the end of the 16-hour journey (which flew by faster than I expected), I felt both satisfied and eager for more.
If you’re a fan of dystopian horror or character-driven stories with plenty of action, this audiobook is a must-listen. And if you haven’t started the Mountain Man series yet, do yourself a favor and dive in from Book 1 – you won’t regret it.
