Now here comes my one regret: try as I might (including some online sleuthing!), I couldn’t find out who narrates this particular audiobook edition—which honestly breaks my heart because they absolutely deserve credit! Whoever it is brings an impressive balance between menace and empathy: Victor is intimidating yet oddly sympathetic; allies sound distinct and memorable; villains ooze charisma and dread in equal measure. The performance breathes life—and undeath—into every scene.

If there were moments when exposition on necromantic mechanics slowed things down just a tad (especially compared to earlier action-packed chapters), those were minor blips on an otherwise thrilling ride through moral ambiguity and supernatural intrigue.
