As someone who adores LitRPGs for their sense of progress and possibility, I found myself swept away once more by Jake Thayne’s relentless evolution, his triumphs—and especially his uncertainties.

This ninth entry doesn’t just revisit familiar system prompts and dungeon crawls; it stretches out into grand new territory. I’ve always admired how this series weaves crunchy stat mechanics with genuine emotional stakes, but here, Zogarth pushes even further—Jake is no longer simply surviving or leveling up. He’s stepping fully into leadership and legacy, confronting not only monsters but the ethics of power itself. The sheer scope—a multiversal council meeting Sky Whales, political intrigue among the Verdant Witches and Order of the Malefic Viper—made me reflect on times in my own life when responsibility landed unexpectedly in my lap. It was easy to feel Jake’s tension as he juggles his own ambitions with what others expect from him.

What stood out most this time was how personal everything felt despite all the cosmic drama. Whether Jake is crafting new skills like “Eternal Shadow” after facing down a two-headed hydra (that battle! I could almost hear my own heartbeat speeding up), or navigating family moments back home before plunging into chaos again, there’s a real vulnerability beneath all that bravado. His confusion over being branded a heretic struck me too—it reminded me how growth often means facing labels you didn’t choose or understand.

The audiobook is gloriously brought to life by Travis Baldree—his performance remains one of my favorite aspects across this series. Baldree gives every character such distinctive personality: you can feel Jake’s determination tightening through grit teeth during tense moments; Villy’s cryptic wisdom delivered with just enough warmth (and mischief) to make him lovable rather than merely intimidating; Miranda juggling logistical nightmares somehow manages both exasperation and hopefulness in her voice thanks to Baldree’s nuanced delivery. There are scenes full of banter—dinners with friends revealing secrets—that made me laugh aloud alone in my kitchen because they were so alive.

Still, if I have any complaint it’s that sometimes the plot bursts at the seams—a little too much going on between mega-dungeons, faction politics, evolution quests… at times I wished for more space to savor quieter developments or let big revelations breathe before another crisis erupted. But then again: isn’t that part of what makes progression fantasies irresistible? That feeling that life keeps throwing ever-bigger challenges your way?

By book nine many series start to lose steam—but not here. Instead there’s fresh depth: existential puzzles about race evolution (“higher variant” human!), questions about loyalty and what it means to lead when you don’t have all the answers, even debates over whether true power should be shared at all costs (those magical books bestowing classes/professions gave me chills thinking about unintended consequences). When Jake finally stands at Nevermore’s abyssal entrance—with old rivals watching, alliances shifting—I felt genuinely nervous for him…and desperately wanted book ten right away.
