Abyss Audiobook – Unbound, Book 7

One late afternoon, as rain tapped softly against my window and the sky turned a brooding gray, I let myself be swept into “Abyss Unbound” by Nicoli Gonnella—book seven in his ambitious Unbound series. There’s something almost ceremonial about immersing yourself in an audiobook this long (a hefty 28 hours!), especially one so richly layered with turmoil, transformation, and hope. But thanks to both the magnitude of the story and Travis Baldree’s compelling narration, every moment spent listening felt not just worthwhile but necessary.

Felix’s journey here is weighty—quite literally shaped by oceanic power unleashed over Ahkestria—and he finds himself thrust from battle-worn survivor to de facto leader. This shift hit home for me: I’ve never had to steer a city through magical tidal waves or fend off abyssal horrors (thank goodness!), but that feeling of shouldering new responsibility resonates all too well. Gonnella gives us a protagonist who aches under the pressure but refuses to back down; Felix second-guesses, stumbles, adapts, and sometimes bristles at political games and expectations—all with a humanity that grounds this sprawling epic.

What kept me hooked wasn’t only the high stakes or inventive LitRPG mechanics—it was how real everything felt beneath the fantasy veneer. The author doesn’t flinch away from showing us that victories have consequences; triumph brings as many headaches as celebrations. Felix must contend not only with ancient magic changing him on a fundamental level (those scenes exploring his Boon are some of my favorites) but also with teammates whose own transformations complicate their dynamic. At times it reminded me of growing pains in any close-knit group: learning when to lead versus when to trust others’ strengths—a lesson we could all revisit now and then.

The pacing does ebb and flow like its title promises: sections focused on training or meditation can feel unhurried compared to frantic battles or urgent council meetings. I found these stretches contemplative rather than tedious—almost meditative themselves—but listeners craving relentless action might fidget during those moments. On the flip side, if you love deep dives into character growth alongside your spell-slinging showdowns (I sure do), there’s plenty here to savor.

A particular joy is Travis Baldree’s narration—he brings clarity even amid crowded casts and complex lore without ever resorting to caricature or bombast. His subtle vocal shifts distinguish characters effectively, while emotional scenes land true thanks to his empathy-driven delivery; I lost count of how many times his interpretation made me genuinely root for someone—or fear what lurked in those fathomless waters.

If there’s anything missing for hardcore LitRPG fans hoping for loads of loot-grinding stats or classic city-building segments (which previous books did more), this installment leans instead toward introspection and big-picture world-saving stakes—a narrative tradeoff that worked for me but might surprise others.

Ultimately, “Abyss Unbound” left me thoughtful long after finishing—the kind of story where leadership means wrestling not just monsters outside your gates but doubts within your heart. If you’re ready for an epic saga where consequence matters as much as conquest—and want a narrator who’ll guide you through every undertow—I can’t recommend this journey enough.
