As someone who’s loved Shannon Messenger’s Keeper of the Lost Cities series since I first stumbled across it in my niece’s room years ago, this installment felt like both a reunion and an unexpected detour: familiar characters and magic, but filtered through the restless lens of Keefe, a character whose humor always masked so much depth.

What struck me immediately was how intimate this audiobook feels compared to previous entries. For once, we’re not peeking over Sophie Foster’s shoulder—we’re living inside Keefe’s head as he grapples with guilt, raw power he can’t quite tame, and the suffocating responsibility that comes from wanting desperately to protect his friends (especially Sophie). Ideally, I’d want someone who brings levity without undercutting the darker undercurrents; those layered emotions deserve space to breathe.

My favorite element has always been Messenger’s skill at balancing personal stakes with epic adventure—and here she doubles down on inner conflict without losing momentum or heart. We witness Keefe test his limits physically and emotionally; his journey isn’t just about powers or battles but about confronting uncomfortable truths and forging agency out of chaos. The theme of sacrifice runs deep—it echoes the hardest choices I’ve faced as an adult: when loving fiercely means risking heartbreak or isolation.

If there’s anything I missed in Unraveled (and perhaps this will be remedied in future installments), it’s more frequent interaction between Keefe and some side characters—the solitude fits his story arc but occasionally left me longing for that sparkling banter KOTLC readers adore. Still, these quieter passages made every message exchanged with Sophie feel urgent and precious.

In all honesty? This book left me hopeful—not just for Keefe’s fictional fate but for anyone navigating identity amidst upheaval. Unraveled reminds us that stepping away isn’t always running away; sometimes it means making space for growth so you can return stronger than before.
