There’s a certain pleasure I find in diving deep into a mystery novel, especially on those quiet evenings, nestled in my cozy armchair, sipping on a cup of chamomile tea. This is how I found myself, thoroughly engrossed in The Last to Die Audiobook, narrated with such dexterity by Marguerite Gavin. With the city outside descending into the quiet of the night, Beverly Barton’s riveting storytelling took center stage in my mind.

Cherokee Pointe has always intrigued me, ever since the captivating narrative of The Fifth Victim. There’s something about the place, with its dark pasts and deeper secrets. This sequel, however, took the thrill up a notch. The sheer malevolence of the killer, coupled with the suspenseful narrative, made it an edge-of-the-seat experience. I found myself drawing parallels, making guesses, and getting constantly surprised at the unfolding plot.

What I particularly enjoyed was the character depth of Jazzy Talbot. From the societal stereotypes associated with her to the vulnerabilities and strength she showcased, it was a roller-coaster of emotions. Marguerite Gavin, with her skillful narration, added layers to Jazzy’s character that made her feel so palpable, so real. Each time the story shifted its focus to her, I felt a personal connection, often rooting for her amidst the chaos.

By the time I reached the end, the early hours of the morning were starting to dawn, and I was left with a satisfying conclusion and an eagerness to dive into the next in the series. Beverly Barton’s genius, seamlessly brought to life by Marguerite Gavin, is an experience any mystery enthusiast should not miss.
