Pirateaba’s portrayal of Goblins—especially Rags and Garen Redfang—took me by surprise. So often in fantasy, creatures like them are boxed into villainy without nuance. Here, though, they’re layered and sympathetic; their struggles and ambitions gave me new perspectives on conflict and identity. As someone who’s worked with kids from diverse backgrounds in education, these themes around empathy and seeing beyond stereotypes tugged at my heartstrings.

The simultaneous arcs—Tom [the Clown] fighting demons in distant Rhir; Zel Shivertail bracing for confrontation with Wall Lord Ilvriss while dreading the Necromancer’s return—give this installment an almost orchestral scope. The weaving together of so many threads could easily become confusing or overwrought, but Pirateaba juggles everything deftly: every perspective adds tension or context without dragging down the pace.

Now let’s talk narration: Andrea Parsneau (assuming she voices this edition) once again stuns with her vocal range and sensitivity to character nuances. Each voice—from haunted Tom to resolute Erin—is distinct yet consistent throughout those marathon 34 hours(!). She injects humor into banter scenes (seriously—I laughed out loud more than once), but also manages gut-wrenching gravitas during darker moments without ever going over-the-top.

If there are weaknesses here—and nothing is perfect—it might be that some subplots threaten to sprawl too wide at times; there were a few chapters where I wished we’d lingered longer on certain characters before shifting again. Still, by the climax I understood why every strand was necessary—the final crescendo feels earned rather than forced.

Special mention must go to the bonus content: Krsysl Wordsmith’s chronicle of the 2nd Antinium War is an absolute gift for world-building junkies like myself! It enriches our sense of history behind present events and adds a bittersweet edge to ongoing conflicts.
