As I curled up in bed one night, ready to escape into another world, I pressed play on The Forsaken God: An Epic LitRPG/GameLit Adventure audiobook by C.M. Carney. The room was dimly lit, with only the soft glow of my bedside lamp illuminating the pages of the book I had set aside in favor of this audio adventure.

I’ll admit, I made a rookie mistake by starting with this book without having read the previous four in the series. However, even without the prior knowledge, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the story. It was like watching Return of the Jedi without having seen the other Star Wars movies – the characters were great, but I couldn’t fully grasp the depth of their relationships and powers. Nonetheless, the quests, godlike abilities, leveling trees, and powerful gear had me on the edge of my seat. It was a dream come true for any Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast.

Armen Taylor’s narration once again amazed me. His voice brought the story to life, and I found myself in awe of the twists and turns that C.M. Carney expertly weaved. The battles were intense, and the character development was captivating. I can’t wait for the next installment, Chaos Rising.

In this book, the adventure continues, and we are treated to more popular culture references and an explanation of how the realms came into existence. The voice acting was fitting for the material, and I was particularly drawn to the mythology of the Realms. The author’s choice of creatures, such as the Aboleth and Coatl, added depth and intrigue to the world-building. The action-packed story kept me engaged from start to finish.

However, I must mention that there were moments when the character interactions and the disjointed LitRPG interruptions became a bit overwhelming. Lex, in particular, tested my patience. Perhaps in book format, these elements would be less distracting, but in audio form, they occasionally took away from the overall experience. Despite this, I am determined to finish the series and appreciate the unique elements that the author brings to the table, even if it means enduring more of Lex’s antics.

Overall, The Forsaken God is a thrilling addition to the series, filled with adventure, mythology, and unexpected twists. Dive into this epic LitRPG/GameLit adventure and lose yourself in the realms.
