In the midst of a busy morning commute, I found solace in the captivating world of Machine Learning audiobook by Hugh Howey. As the train rattled along the tracks, I was transported to a future where artificial intelligences and virtual worlds reign supreme. This collection of stories is a thought-provoking exploration of humanity’s relationship with technology.
One standout story in this collection is Peace in Amber. It left me emotionally shaken, with tears streaming down my face. The depth and power of Hugh Howey’s storytelling truly shines through in this piece. It compelled me to seek out more of his work, even leading me to read Slaughterhouse Five as a result (which I thoroughly enjoyed, but felt that Howey took it to another level with Peace in Amber).
The book is divided into seven sections, each delving into different themes such as aliens, artificial intelligences, and virtual worlds. While there were some weaker stories scattered throughout, my personal favorites were the ones from the Silo Series. The writing in these stories is exceptionally strong and showcases why they are among Howey’s most popular works.
I also found myself engrossed in the Virtual Worlds and Lost and Found sections. These stories captivated my imagination and left me pondering their deeper meanings long after finishing them. However, I must admit that the Fantasy section didn’t resonate with me as much. While it was interesting to see Howey explore different ground, some of the stories felt less thought out and left me questioning their purpose.
As a fan of Hugh Howey’s previous books, I initially purchased this audiobook on Kindle as a bargain deal. Although it isn’t my favorite work by him, it is undeniably great. However, there were certain aspects that didn’t align with my personal preferences. For instance, I’m not particularly fond of robot or outer space-themed stories, which were present in this collection. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the Wool mini-trio and was deeply moved by Howey’s autobiographical piece about his experience on the day of 9/11.
Overall, Machine Learning audiobook is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged collection of stories that will leave you questioning the impact of technology on our lives. With narrators Gabra Zackman, Scott Aiello, and Hugh Howey himself bringing these tales to life, this science fiction and fantasy masterpiece is a must-listen.
