This time, she finds herself in South Carolina for an innocent task – teaching young students the art of digging and inspecting old bones. Little did she know that this seemingly harmless field school would lead her down a dangerous path.

During her excavation, Tempe stumbles upon a skeleton that appears to be much fresher than expected. Her doubts are confirmed when she investigates further in her lab. It becomes clear that someone has been mixing fresh bones with the old ones, but the identity of these mysterious skeletons remains a mystery.

With each trail she follows, Tempe’s life becomes increasingly endangered. The local police are involved, but even the sheriff seems suspicious. As Tempe navigates through this treacherous case on her own, her determination to survive shines through. She no longer relies on others like Andrew or the police; she has developed a resilience that is truly inspiring.

Kathy Reichs’ novel takes on a new voice with Dorothee Berryman as the narrator for this installment. Her storytelling brings an added layer of intensity and suspense to an already gripping story. The ninth episode in this series is nothing short of breathtaking.
