As the sun set on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I found myself cozied up in bed, lost in the world of A Splendid Ruin audiobook by Megan Chance. Historical fiction has always been a favorite genre of mine, so I was excited to dive into this story. However, I must admit that it fell flat for me.
The story seemed to drag on and on, with no end in sight. The main character, May Kimble, was rather irritating to me. Her trusting and naive nature may have been necessary for the plot to unfold, but it left me frustrated with her decisions. Additionally, the romance in the story felt forced and unnecessary.
Reading along while listening to the audiobook, I noticed that there were no discernible paragraphs or indents for characters’ dialogues. This made it difficult to follow and disrupted my reading experience. However, Carly Robins did an excellent job narrating the story. Her voice brought life to the characters and kept me engaged throughout.
Unfortunately, towards the end of the narration, it felt like both the author and narrator were desperately trying to salvage a lackluster storyline. The plot twists thrown in during the last hour seemed rushed and unsatisfying. It took far too long for May Kimble to smarten up and seek revenge, making her character development feel belated.
However, one aspect that I did enjoy was how the San Francisco earthquake played a significant role in saving May from her mistakes. It added an element of excitement and unpredictability to an otherwise average story.
Overall, A Splendid Ruin was just okay for me. While there were moments of enjoyment and some interesting plot elements, it didn’t live up to my expectations as a historical fiction lover.
