Lark doesn’t flinch from disturbing content: graphic violence and psychological manipulation are front and center here. Yet somehow, nothing feels gratuitous. Each chilling detail seems to serve a purpose in mapping out her characters’ jagged emotional landscapes.

I have to admit there were moments when I had to pause—let my pulse slow before hitting play again—not just because of what happened on the page but because of how real these struggles felt. The tension is relentless but masterfully controlled; you can sense things spiraling out long before they actually do.

On a personal level, while I obviously don’t inhabit such extreme moral territory (!), there was something hauntingly relatable about watching someone wrestle with impulses he knows could destroy everything good in his life. Who hasn’t battled inner darkness? Who hasn’t feared loving something (or someone) so much it could undo you? That emotional truth resonated with me deeply—even if my own demons are far tamer than those prowling through these pages!

The relationship between Mara and our antihero is as complex as any I’ve encountered in dark romance—their chemistry practically sizzles through every whispered exchange—but what really impressed me was how Mara remains her own person throughout: strong yet vulnerable, always slightly unpredictable.
