Seated in my cozy corner with ambient lighting, surrounded by the muted hustle and bustle of the city outside, I pressed play on The Silent Tower audiobook. As a lover of both technology and fantastical tales, the premise of Barbara Hambly’s story intrigued me. The idea of marrying the world of magic with the realm of computer programming was both audacious and alluring.

The story starts with an unsettling urgency – the murder of a magician. While this in itself was enough to set the tone, the protagonist, Stonne Caris’s commitment to solve the mystery added layers of anticipation. Hambly’s craft shines as she beautifully juxtaposes two distinct worlds – one rooted in arcane arts and another in the binary language of computers.

As Caris delves into the mystery, the discovery of a portal to another dimension adds a twist that I didn’t see coming. This portal bridges the chasm between magic and technology, introducing us to Joanna, a computer programmer. What I truly relished was Joanna’s character arc. Thrust into a world alien to her, she showcased resilience and adaptability. Her journey from being a woman of science to grappling with the arcane forces of magic was both compelling and believable, thanks to Hambly’s masterful storytelling.
