In the tranquil setting of my local park, under the shade of a towering oak tree, I immersed myself in the captivating world of The Silence of Bones audiobook by June Hur. Set in 1800 Joseon (Korea), this historical murder mystery took me on a journey through the life of Seol, a young girl trapped in a world of low status and indentured servitude.

The author’s vivid descriptions transported me to another time and place, allowing me to fully experience the atmospheric beauty of Joseon. However, while I appreciated the attention to detail, I found the pacing to be extremely slow at times. Despite this minor setback, I was engrossed in unraveling the cleverly crafted murder mystery. Hur skillfully kept me guessing about the identity of the culprit, changing my mind multiple times throughout the story.

Seol’s character was well-written and her struggles were heart-wrenching to witness. The constant physical and emotional abuse she endured made for a difficult but impactful read. While I had one or two quibbles with certain plot points towards the end, overall, The Silence of Bones was an engaging and thought-provoking book.

Narrated by Greta Jung, this audiobook brought Seol’s story to life. Jung did a commendable job portraying Seol’s character; however, there were moments when her portrayal of other characters fell short. This occasionally disrupted my immersion in the story.

As a first-time reader of June Hur’s work, I was thoroughly impressed by her intricate storytelling and informative narrative. The tapestry she wove was addictive and left me yearning for more. Each listening session became longer than planned as I couldn’t bear to tear myself away from this captivating tale.
