As the rain poured outside my window, I found myself transported to the medieval era of the 12th century while listening to The Pillars of the Earth audiobook by Ken Follett. Curled up in bed with a warm cup of tea, I was captivated by the power struggle between the church and the crown during that time.

Follett’s depiction of the church’s desire for control over empires is masterfully done, and he paints a realistic picture of the general public during this tumultuous period. The novel not only provides entertainment but also offers a glimpse into the environment and culture of that particular century.

One aspect that stood out to me was the corruption within society and how individuals transformed as a result. The ambitions of various characters are explored in detail, showcasing their relentless pursuit at any cost.

The main character, Philip, is portrayed as a monk with an ambitious goal, which is ironic considering monks were not allowed to have personal ambitions in those days. I noticed similarities between The Pillars of the Earth and other works by Follett such as World Without End and Fall of Giants. While set in different time periods, his writing style remains consistent. Richard E. Grant’s narration adds depth to this gothic-style novel with his appropriate pitch for capturing the essence of that era.
