I curled up with my headphones and let Suzanne Collins’ world swallow me whole again, only this time not through Katniss’s eyes but those of young Haymitch Abernathy. As someone who’s always been fascinated by what shapes us—the little heartbreaks and battles behind every weathered expression—I found myself captivated by the raw vulnerability of Haymitch, a character who until now had felt as if he’d come to us already broken.

The story opens in District 12 on reaping morning for the Second Quarter Quell—a day thick with fear and sorrow because twice as many tributes are being taken from each district. We’re immediately plunged into Haymitch’s anxieties: his simple wish just to survive another day and be close to the girl he loves, all while ignoring the ever-present threat of being ripped away by fate. There was such a visceral sadness to his home life; Collins makes you feel every ache in his bones, every flicker of hope in hopeless places.

What struck me most is how deftly Collins weaves new shades into an already beloved universe. Knowing where Haymitch ends up—as Katniss and Peeta’s sardonic mentor—casts a bittersweet glow over everything. Through flashbacks, moments of camaraderie among tributes (especially his friend-who-is-almost-a-sister), or tense encounters with Capitol excesses, we see not just what Panem takes from its children but also what it leaves behind inside them.

One thing I absolutely loved about this audiobook is how personal Haymitch’s struggle feels compared to earlier series entries. Yes, there are breathtaking arena scenes—and they do deliver—but much more powerful are the small moments: longing glances at friends left behind, dark jokes shared out of desperation, stubborn flashes of rebellion that bubble up even when all seems lost. The political backdrop sharpens these emotions; every cruel twist orchestrated by Snow and the Gamemakers feels like both a plot device and an emotional gut-punch.

Jefferson White’s narration is truly inspired casting. His voice brings unexpected tenderness to Haymitch—a mix of youthful grit and growing despair—that made me forget entirely about Woody Harrelson’s cinematic take or even my own imagined version from reading as a teen years ago. There were scenes where White’s subtle cracks mid-sentence perfectly echoed Haymitch teetering between hope and resignation; others where bravado masked deep grief so convincingly that I found myself pausing just to breathe before continuing.

If there was anything I didn’t love? Maybe only that some supporting characters fade too quickly (the oddsmaker tribute especially piqued my curiosity!), but perhaps that’s part of Collins’ commentary: so many lives snuffed out before we can even know their stories fully—it hurts precisely because it rings true for both Panem and our own world.

For longtime fans like me—or honestly anyone curious about trauma’s aftershocks—Sunrise on the Reaping offers both harrowing action and heartfelt introspection. It deepens our understanding not only of one man but also why rebellion sometimes begins quietly inside a bruised heart long before banners fly or arrows are loosed.
