That was my setting as I pressed play on Elsie Silver’s “Reckless,” the fourth installment of the Chestnut Springs series. It turns out this book was just as irresistible as my favorite chocolate cake: rich, layered, and unexpectedly comforting.

From its opening scenes, “Reckless” reeled me in with its blend of small-town charm and high-stakes emotions. As someone who has had to start over more than once in life, I instantly empathized with our protagonist—a woman aching to leave her toxic marriage behind but unsure if she can trust herself again. And then there’s Theo Silva—a bull rider whose reputation precedes him (and not always for the better). Joe Arden voices Theo with such rugged charisma that you almost believe he could walk right into your kitchen and offer you a mischievous grin over coffee. Theo isn’t just a walking cliché; Silver writes him with complexity, allowing his tenderness and vulnerability to peek through his bravado.

Savannah Peachwood brings authenticity and emotional nuance to our heroine—her delivery captures every ounce of fear, hope, longing, and eventual joy that pulses through this story. The dual narration works beautifully here; switching perspectives allows listeners to fully experience both sides of this push-and-pull dynamic.

What struck me most about “Reckless” is how it honors both desire and healing. The chemistry between these characters is electrifying—I won’t pretend I didn’t blush during their first night together! But beyond the steaminess lies an exploration of trust: trusting yourself after heartbreak, risking connection when it feels safer to shut everyone out. When an unexpected pregnancy enters the mix (the classic secret baby trope done right), I genuinely cared what would happen next—not just because of the drama but because these people felt like friends struggling toward hope.

I especially appreciated Silver’s respect for her heroine’s agency—this is not a damsel waiting for rescue but a woman learning she deserves happiness on her own terms. There are moments where trauma bubbles up or miscommunication leads them astray; at times I wanted less internal back-and-forth from each character (a little repetition slowed things), but overall their emotional journeys were authentic enough that I never lost interest.

Returning fans will enjoy brief glimpses of familiar faces from previous Chestnut Springs novels—Elsie Silver crafts communities as well as couples—but newcomers needn’t worry: “Reckless” stands alone perfectly well.
