As a retired narrator, I hold high standards for my reviews, rarely leaving comments. However, Anna Massey’s performance of Rebecca has now made her my favorite narrator. Her exquisite portrayal of this dark classic was simply mesmerizing. Daphné du Maurier’s incredible storytelling deserved nothing less than Massey’s exceptional narration. I know I will revisit this audiobook time and time again. Well done!

It may surprise some that it doesn’t revolve around the police or a detective, but rather a young woman who marries an older, wealthier man and becomes the mistress of the grand English manor, Manderley, in the early 20th century. She is haunted by her insecurities, fearing she will never live up to the perfect image of her husband’s deceased first wife, Rebecca.

The struggle of the naive second wife against her dominant and influential husband, as well as the lingering presence of Rebecca in their home, is palpable. The crime and mystery lie in Rebecca’s death and why her memory continues to haunt everyone at Manderley.

This British classic takes us on a journey through the eyes of a young and inexperienced traveler who unexpectedly becomes the wife of an older Englishman—a man with a grand estate, a sinister housekeeper, and a deceased wife. Anna Massey’s narration adds a film noir touch to the story, making it even more captivating. I will forever remember her portrayal of Mrs. Danvers, the devoted and obsessed housekeeper who slowly lures the new wife towards a tragic fate. I found myself unable to leave my car, listening intently as she whispered her sinister intentions. Did she succeed in her wicked plan to rid Manderley of the young bride?
