At times there were long stretches devoted to explaining mechanics or laying down cosmic ground rules rather than building emotional connections between characters. While world-building is critical in speculative fiction (especially when so much hinges on understanding what’s possible), there were moments where my attention drifted or I craved deeper glimpses into Silas’ inner world outside just problem-solving mode.

But once you cross that threshold—with higher-level threats looming and more personalities joining the fray—the story opens up wonderfully. The multiverse feels alive with menace and potential; themes of competition versus cooperation become tangible as alliances are forged under duress. And even though some secondary cast members get less development than I’d hoped for early on, Oswald hints at rich arcs still to come—a smart move for book one of a longer saga.

Ultimately what makes Induction memorable isn’t just its premise or structure—it’s how it taps into universal anxieties about responsibility in uncertain times, wrapped inside an exhilarating genre adventure. This audiobook reminded me why speculative fiction resonates: by pushing boundaries outward until they reflect truths deep within us all.
