When Heather is forced out of her cocoon during a routine supply run gone wrong, I found myself holding my breath right alongside her.

The post-apocalyptic landscape is rendered vividly; abandoned streets, echoing silence punctuated by distant screams—the whole atmosphere sinks into your bones as you listen. As someone who loves richly painted worlds, I appreciated every detail that made this shattered Britain feel real and heartbreakingly plausible.

I do wish there had been a bit more exploration beyond Heather herself; other characters drift through her orbit but rarely gain their own gravity until later chapters. Still, perhaps that mirrors Heather’s perspective—a world full of strangers who might be threat or salvation or both—and lends authenticity to her journey toward connection.

Since TOKYBOOK hasn’t provided information about the narrator (a minor letdown—I always love shouting out excellent performances!), all I can say is that whoever voices Heather does so with nuance: quiet strength layered over exhaustion and flashes of longing peeking through stoic walls. It never felt melodramatic or forced—just human.
