On a sunny afternoon, while lounging in my backyard hammock, I delved into the world of 21st Birthday audiobook by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. As a fan of mystery and thriller genres, I was excited to dive into the 21st chapter of the Women’s Murder Club novel series. However, I must admit that this installment fell short of my expectations.

The story revolves around the disappearance of Tara, a young mother and wife, along with her infant daughter. Suspicion falls on Lucas, her husband, who paints her as both missing and rebellious. But as the investigation unfolds, gruesome evidence emerges, turning the case on its head.

The narrative is told through the perspectives of Cindy, a crime reporter for Chronicle; Claire Washburn, who harbors theories against the official investigation; and ADA Yuki of SFPD, who brings forth an unexpected suspect. While these multiple viewpoints add depth to the story, they also contribute to its convoluted nature.

I found the plot to be somewhat repetitive if you’ve read other novels in the Women’s Murder Club series. The storyline lacked logical progression at times and didn’t live up to Patterson’s usual standards. That being said, it still managed to hold my attention and provide some suspenseful moments.

January LaVoy’s narration was satisfactory overall. Her sweet voice didn’t quite match the intensity of this type of story but she delivered a decent performance nonetheless.

Despite its flaws, 21st Birthday audiobook offers an intriguing mystery that will keep fans of James Patterson engaged. If you’re looking for a mind-blowing suspenseful read, I recommend giving it a try.
